In this talk, we first introduce physics background of liquid crystals as a novel state of matter. We then present an extended Landau-de Gennes model with a special emphasis on ferroeletric liquid crystals which have a rich variety of practical applications.. Mathematical theory of the model and several interesting mathematical issues will be discussed at the end of the talk.
